The de Havilland Mosquito, affectionately known as the 'Mossie' to its crews, was a British multi-role combat aircraft that served during the Second World War and beyond. With its first flight in 1940, it was one of the fastest operational aircraft in the world. Made almost entirely of wood, its lightweight construction allowed it to outrun many of the fighters of its time. The Mosquito played multiple roles during its service, including low to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, maritime strike aircraft, and fast photo-reconnaissance aircraft. It served in the Royal Air Force and other Allied air forces. The Mosquito's versatility and performance made it one of the most successful aircraft of World War II, earning it the admiration of friend and foe alike.
