The Hawker Typhoon, often simply called the 'Tiffy' in RAF slang, was a British single-seat fighter-bomber, famously used during the Second World War. With its first flight in 1940, it was designed to be a medium-high altitude interceptor, but it truly shone in the ground-attack role, especially from 1943 onwards. The Typhoon was equipped with a powerful Napier Sabre engine and could reach speeds up to 412 mph. It was armed with four 20mm Hispano cannons and could carry bombs and rockets, making it a formidable ground-attack aircraft. The Typhoon played a crucial role in the Battle of Normandy, targeting and destroying enemy armor and fortifications, significantly contributing to the Allied victory. Its ruggedness, firepower, and speed made it a beloved aircraft among its pilots and a terror for the Axis forces.
