The Westland Wyvern was a British single-seat carrier-based multi-role strike aircraft built by Westland Aircraft that served in the 1950s, marking a series of firsts and lasts for naval aviation. It was the first turboprop aircraft to enter service with the Royal Navy and the last propeller-driven aircraft to see combat with the service. The Wyvern was known for its distinctive contra-rotating propellers and powerful Rolls-Royce Eagle piston engine, later models being powered by the Armstrong Siddeley Python turboprop. It saw action during the Suez Crisis in 1956, providing ground attack support. Despite its relatively short service life, the Wyvern made a significant impact with its imposing presence and advanced technology for the time. Its operational history, combined with its unique design and capabilities, makes the Wyvern a fascinating chapter in military aviation history.
