The Convair B-36, also known as the Peacemaker, was a titan of the skies during its operational years from 1949 to 1959. As the largest mass-produced piston-engine aircraft ever made, it boasted an impressive wingspan of 230 feet and was powered by six radial piston engines complemented by four jet engines in later models. Designed for strategic bombing, it was the first bomber capable of delivering any of the nuclear weapons in the U.S. arsenal from inside its four bomb bays without aircraft modifications. The B-36 set the stage for the intercontinental ballistic missile era, serving as a crucial deterrent during the early Cold War years. Its ability to fly missions of over 10,000 miles without refueling showcased the United States' global reach. Despite never seeing combat, the Peacemaker was a symbol of American airpower and technological might, bridging the gap between World War II propeller-driven bombers and the jet age.
