The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark was a supersonic, medium-range interdictor and tactical attack aircraft that also filled the roles of strategic nuclear bomber, aerial reconnaissance, and electronic-warfare aircraft in its various versions. Operational from 1967 to 1998, the F-111 was a key component of the U.S. Air Force's strategic bombing capabilities during the Cold War. Known for its variable-sweep wings, the F-111 could exceed Mach 2.5 speeds. It was one of the most controversial aircraft ever flown, yet it achieved one of the safest operational records of any aircraft in USAF history and became a highly effective all-weather interdiction aircraft.
