The Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star was the first jet fighter used operationally by the United States Army Air Forces, and saw extensive combat in Korea with the United States Air Force. Operational from 1945 to 1958, it was designed with a straight wing and a single jet engine. The P-80 was a milestone in the jet age as it helped transition the U.S. military aviation from propeller-driven to jet fighters. It was famously flown by the likes of Chuck Yeager and was the precursor to the T-33 Shooting Star trainer aircraft. It was also used by other nations, including Brazil and Argentina.
